OUR STORY
In bid to improve reading, we looked to support primary schools with libraries in 2011 when, we discovered children in year 4 unable to sound out 2 letter words.
The following year we started donating colourful storybooks to children to develop an interest in reading. In Lagos, Nigeria, we worked in 5 schools and found children reading 2 years below their expected reading levels. We saw this as we spent time in the classrooms, supporting teachers and reading with the children in year 4 and year 5.
To ensure we could impact children at crucial years, the project was adapted to work with children in the early years of education starting in primary 1.
OUR IMPACT
Our strength is in our partnerships, as we know we cant do this alone. We have worked with financial donors, corporate partners and individuals to adopt 28 primary schools in Lagos working with primary 1 children for 2 years and partnered with charity partners to distributed books to 6 states in Nigeria.
Over 6 years the project has reached over 10,000 children, in 30 schools in 6 states across Nigeria. Children who have an improved reading ability within a year and a 60% increase in retention to complete their primary education.
